A Kids Book about Adopting a Pet

The titles in the A Kids Book about Pets series (3 titles), fittingly authored by animal-oriented media organization The Dodo, cover the full relationship cycle between pet and owner: adopting, caretaking, and saying goodbye. The books are prefaced with the recommendation that they be "read together, grownup and kid," so while the subject matter and tone generally apply to younger children, many of the ideas may require additional explanation. Adopting a Pet walks kids through the pros and cons of adoption, the steps required to give a pet a loving home, and the adjustment period that follows. ith the exception of the intros and outros, the text is minimal, setting only a few spare lines of conversational, direct address on each page. In spite of the accessible form, the lack of back matter and presence of abstract concepts (love, death) and advanced vocab (euthanasia, vaccines, empathy) reinforce the point that these books are intended for grownups talking to children. The more-adult feel is supported by the design's bold, modern-art style, with black text set on solid color fills, only punctuated by the occasional bit of art.
